224 - The exercise and 'healthier' lifestyle blog by Paul Bentley

224 is a diary of updates and thoughts regarding exercise and trying to attain and maintain a ‘healthier’ life style.

My name is Paul Bentley and I started my blog in May 2011. I live in Liverpool in the North West of England, UK – I have always had ‘issues’ with my weight!

Change Chart

When I got to 27st 13lbs (177kgs or 391lbs) I finally decided that ‘enough is enough’ and I need to make changes. As part of the process I decided I need to make myself accountable, so I’ve decided to be accountable to you. Thanks for offering 😉

Many of the posts on the blog will be updates on exercise I am embarking on, but I also hope to write about some observations I make along the way, tips I pick up plus any other useful and useless information.

It’s not scientific, I’m not a health professional and I certainly don’t know exactly what I’m doing. So please, pretty please, don’t do anything I do, unless you have been advised by a doctor, physical trainer, google or the milk man – That’s my attempt at a disclaimer right there.

Now I may not know exactly what I’m doing, but, what I do know is this:

I’ve not been happy and a lot (most) of that is down to my physical size and lack of physical fitness. It’s affected my overall physical health, my emotional health and my mental health. Have I been depressed? Yes. Am I now? Probably. Am I feeling so much better after a few short weeks? Definitely!

I also know this:

Many of you are not happy either and you really, really want to make a change. Is that you? Well look, if it is, I hope that in some small way I can inspire you to make a start. It’s not easy and I don’t just have sympathy, I have empathy.

The first thing I’ve realised is this, small steps baby, small steps. The fact you are reading this is a step in the right direction and one day you will go for a walk, go to the gym, reduce your meal size or some small thing that goes beyond just a thought.

Let’s do this together. I need you and I think you need me.

And for all you ‘lean mean fighting machines’ who may be reading this, welcome! Behave, don’t abuse us (except for Ian my good friend who, if he didn’t abuse me I’d think something was terribly wrong) and give us your support. in a few years time this could be you. Beer, pies, cakes, a reclining chair, it all adds up. Worried? Not so cocky now hey!!

So, that’s it for an ‘About’. I may waffle and get a bit random, but hey this blog is for me (and you). Time to write the next post…

Hasta Pronto,

Paul – friends call me Kracker, be nice and you can too 😉

Great start to a blog and already an inspiring read. Keep up the good work Krack and you’ll soon be a new man.

    • paulbentley says:

Thanks Andy. You’ve done your own bit of inspiring you know. Our little chat in Derek’s garden had an impact on me to get in the saddle – especially when I saw how well you looked! Let’s continue to encourage each other.

  2. Lizzie says:

Hey Kracker great blog. So proud of you and will keep praying for you. Whilst on holiday I have only had one ice cream and one cake. we have both walked so much each day. We will try and keep it up when we get home.

  3. Lu says:

Baby steps?? I think you have taken the biggest and most important step already Kracker – getting started!Opening up, as you have, will give way to lots of great things( and a few surprises too no doubt). Im sure you can do it, will be supporting you all the way 🙂

    • paulbentley says:

Thanks Lu. As Magnus Magnusson (the original Question Master of Mastermind) used to say, “I’ve started so I’ll finish.” 🙂 That’s the way it’s got to be. Thanks for the support. Next year, me and you, 10k, yes?

  4. Team Oyeniyi says:

    Hello Cracker!

YOU CAN DO IT, yes you can! Cheering and praying for you all the from Brazil. I’m on the same fight as well, and I’m loving your blog, it’s very inspiring and encouraging!

    • paulbentley says:

Anelise!!!!!!! Yeah, thanks for keep up with my progress from Brazil!! So you are on the same journey, great! Let’s do it together! You need to find someone to be accountable too. I posted about that on the blog so check it out. Stay with me and we’ll do this!!! Big love x

Si se puede! I’ve been looking for people blogging about the same thing as me and I am quite glad you are the first I found. I’m looking forward to keeping up with you!

    • paulbentley says:

      Valerie!!!! Si mi puede!!!!

Como estas? Hey are you Spanish/Hispanic? You may have noticed the odd ‘adios’ and ‘luego’ at the end of my posts. My daughter and I are mad about España and have friends in Madrid. We are ‘self teaching’ Spanish to each other.

How cool is this. Someone blogging about the same thing as me, who speaks the language I love. Fantastico!!!!!

Anyway, blogging. You need to put a subscribe button on your blog so I can subscribe to your posts. We can encourage each other on our journey. I’m already a bit concerned with your posts however. You need to – FORGET ABOUT THE SCALES!!! Focus on wanting to be ‘healthier’, give it your all at the gym, get a buddy to come with you and keep blogging. The more accountable you are the more you’ll think twice before you take a step back.

The weight WILL come off. Check my fb page for loads of images of my gym experience.

      “We Can Do It…!”

      Adios amiga

Estoy bien! I am Latina indeed- Peruvian-Brazilian. I love languages as well and grew up speaking Spanish & English but have expanded to French, Portuguese, and bits of Swahili.

As for the blogging bit, I have just about no idea how to do anything but write. I figured out color text yesterday and practically jumped for joy… I feel you on the weight bit, but I think most of that comes from the fact that my entire family focuses on the numbers. All my life that’s what it’s been about really. Thankfully I have been dragging my mom with me to classes and I make her stay longer than she wants to so that I can get in at least two hours a day. I realize after reading what I write that I do write about the numbers a lot, but there are so many fitness goals I have that I’m dying to reach! I’m glad I can use your posts and pictures to keep me going- I’m hoping it’ll be that extra push I may need at the end of the day!

Hasta luego chico- si quieres ayuda con tu español, me dices!
